My first attempt at a personal website was a simple list of facts and opinions. I have tried other layouts since then, but now I think I started with the right idea.
I am a computer science student, born 2003. My main interests are:
- mathematics
music
The main genres I listen to are IDM, drum & bass, breakcore, darkwave, post-punk, industrial, and black metal. The albums/EPs/singles I have liked enough to download are listed here. I am sharing the files on Soulseek; my username is "parhelictriangle".
- programming
- this website
Other things I like include:
- anonymity
appreciating art, regardless of who made it
When someone whose music I like says "don't listen to my music if you are part of this group or hold these beliefs, it's not for you" I find it funny because they can't stop me. I also don't restrict myself to music made only by people who share my political beliefs. I believe that it's possible to appreciate and understand art without fully endorsing/supporting its creator. I also believe that "separate the art from the artist" is an oversimplification.
- assembling/disassembling things
- cleanliness
- command line programs
- competitive typing
- conciseness
- conspiracy theories
crossdressing
I would like to live in a society where this term is obsolete. Females wearing trousers are no longer considered crossdressers; so should males wearing dresses/skirts. Male crossdressers are stereotyped as tasteless and perverted, but it is possible for one to be well put together, and motivated by fashion/aesthetics rather than sexual fetishism. As long as you are in shape, well-groomed, and wearing clothes that are not cheap-looking, garish, ill-fitting or too revealing, you can look decent. Passing as female is not necessary.
- free and/or open-source software
- free speech
gatekeeping
Many things are not for everyone. If something tries too hard to appeal to everyone, it ends up appealing to no one. People should found their own communities instead of imposing their ideas on existing communities with established cultures.
- goth style
- honesty
- individualism
- liminal spaces
liquorice
Liquorice allsorts is garbage though. I can't stand that cloying coconut gunk. Plain black liquorice is the best.
- meritocracy
- minimalism
piracy
Digital files are information. Information should be free; it cannot be owned because it can be duplicated infinitely. Distributing information is not theft. If artists want to make money, they should sell physical media and merch, hold live performances, and/or ask for donations. Most fans who pirate would pay for a shirt or concert tickets.
- privacy
- schizoposting
- solitude
- walking
Things I dislike include:
- alcohol
- censorship
children online
Restrict children's internet access. They contribute nothing meaningful to the web, and their presence is used by authoritarians to promote censorship. Also, today's obnoxious irony culture was caused partially by a whole generation growing up online and developing deep insecurity about being called "cringe". Cringe is just how most children are, and their activities should be kept out of the public eye so they can mature instead of doubling down. I would have turned out much worse had I been online younger.
- clutter
- copyright/DRM/intellectual property laws
- corporate music
- dating/hookup culture
- directionbrains
dogs
I also dislike how western society considers you a psychopath for not enjoying being around loud, messy, clingy, slobbery animals who piss and shit everywhere. Honestly, I dislike the concept of pets in general, especially the corny and creepy way in which people anthropormorphise and/or infantilise them (I've seen "dog ice cream" being sold in several places - why?). People who view their pets as children are obnoxious, and people who use "doggo"/"hooman" slang can go to hell. I also don't see how eating dogs is so heinous when people keep rabbits, pigs and chickens as pets and have no qualms about eating those animals.
- easily offended people
hot weather
I hate summer. The glare, the thirst, the fatigue, the sweat, the restless sleep, the thick damp air, the insects, the smells, the burning, the stickiness.
- hiveminds
- identity politics
irony poisoning
Culture needs to move on from irony. (Camp and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.) Pretentious crap for people who don't have the balls to take themselves seriously. "Ironic" art is so tiresome to engage with; I want genuine feeling that I can be invested in. The correct response to "you are cringe" isn't snarky agreement, it's "no". Or simply ignoring the haters.
mental health industry
I don't need to be told how I think/feel or why, I can figure that out myself. Most therapy is a scam for people who can't introspect. When they've run out of ideas they give you drugs, and if the drugs don't work they increase your dose, and if that doesn't work they try another drug, and repeat. I should have realised earlier that only I can solve my problems.
modern car design
Car design peaked in the 1950s/1960s. The general trend of products becoming blander, cheaper and uglier is particularly apparent in 21st century car design. It must be possible to build a car that is safe, aerodynamic, and also beautiful, but I guess that's too much effort for modern companies. Recently built cars also come packed with spyware for the benefit of people who lack spatial awareness and can't read maps.
modern web design
The design of this website is intended to be antithetical to the current state of the web. Most importantly, this site contains no JavaScript. The site is also text-only.
